Southern Oregon Wine Country
It is a little known fact that Southern Oregon proudly produces some of the most exceptional wines in the entire state of Oregon all within minutes of the beautiful city of Grants Pass. Due to the multitude of soils and microclimates where the number of sunny days and rainfall amounts offer ideal growing conditions, Southern Oregon is able to create a wider variety of wines that are normally associated with Northern Oregon. Southern Oregon is dotted with breathtaking and award winning wineries and vineyards and is home to such varietals as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Tempranillo, just to name a few.
Let us start with the Applegate Valley, one of the newest appellations. In this lovely range, The Illinois Valley, coolest of the regions, is suitable for growing high quality Burgundian varieties such as Pinot Gris, Riesling and Chardonnay's. Merlot thrives in The Applegate Valley which experiences a warmer and drier season all tucked between its three adjoining river valleys.
Next the beautiful Rogue Valley Appellation, with its rich fertile river valley, which does well with the Bordeaux varieties like the Syrah and Cabernets. The climate here is distinctly warmer in this part of the state and does well with these heat seeking varietals.
Further north, the Umpqua Valley Appellation. Its series of hills and valleys create cool enough weather to produce high quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, yet warm enough for such varieties as Cabernets and Merlots with a smattering of French American hybrids.
