National Attention Following 9/11 Attacks
In October 2001 the Grants Pass Daily Courier received national attention after a columnist and copy editor was fired. Dan Guthrie, an employee and author of the "Dogwatch" column for eight years, was terminated shortly after he wrote in a Sept. 15th column that President Bush "skeddadled" following the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
There was public outcry after the article ran including protests and death threats directed against Guthrie. He was fired by publisher Dennis Mack, although no official reason for the termination was ever given.
Dennis Roler was the editor who had allowed the column to run. In an apology to readers, he wrote: "Criticism of our chief executive and those around him needs to be responsible and appropriate. Labeling him and the nation's other top leaders as cowards as the United States tries to unite after its bloodiest terrorist attack ever isn't responsible or appropriate."
